Studio Shoot - Sound Research 12/02/2021

Previous to lockdown 3.0, Isaac and I went into the Foley sound recording room to conduct some experiments using the props to see what sounds we could create. We agreed with our team that we wanted eerie, anxiety-inducing sounds to further the suspense of the film.

We found a metal sheet like this image on the top left displays, and waved it up and down using the flexibility of it to create sounds which actually made very interesting sounds. Also kicking it and bashing other objects onto it to create a dynamic range of sounds, along with forming echo's and reverb. We also found a metal bar, like the top right image displays, we used a metal rod and other various objects and ran them along side to side to see what sounds they created. I found the metal sounds to be the most striking and fitting with our theme.
These metal/aluminium sheets could also be used to create a thunder sound effect if needed.

Foley techniques we could use

Background noise:

Rain - technique to use - pouring handful of rice onto a metal plate/dish to create the sound of falling rain.

Plastic bins can be used to replicate heartbeat sounds, which could be a great way to heighten the characters anxiety in the film. To do this: Take a plastic bin, flip it over, and push the bottom in and out. Adjust the rhythm according to your desired heartbeat speed. You can also use the cap of a Snapple bottle (large metal bottle cap)

Pete Burgis - Foley Artist

A long piece of tape on a wooden surface can be used to create a squeaky door and door slamming effect by pulling on the tape all the way up, making a fist and slamming it onto the table. This effect could definitely be useful for our film.

Blowing in and out of a balloon can create a higher pitch breathing/panting sound, which could be useful in portraying the main characters anxiety and stress in the film.
Another interesting way of creating a heartbeat sound effect is by using a shirt, and giving tension by stretching it out and in.
